I am continually hearing about the recurring trend in dieting known as high protein low carb diets. However, despite the huge popularity of these kinds of diet programs that have sprouted up over the years, I still can't help but feel nervous about the effects low carb diets.

I am a food person and quite frankly, diets scare me. It isn't just the mere thought of parting from my sweet pastries, junk food and cola that make me nervous. Going online and doing research on the dangers of low carb diets yield a lot of results. This simply proves my anxiety was not totally groundless after all. Admittedly, there are a number of benefits from going into a low carb diet, the most obvious of which is losing weight. Nevertheless, one may still have to question the merits of the low carb diet for nothing is flawless after all.

Following a low carb diet plan usually leads to a lack of fiber and antioxidants. Going the high protein low carb way may also lead to too much protein in the body which may affect the strength of bones and place a strain on the kidneys. There is also the danger of ketosis, a well known side effect of low carb diets. A condition brought about by the improper burning of fat, ketosis causes nausea and lightheadedness. These are only some of the dangers presented by low carbohydrate diets.

Many people lose weight on low carb diets and gain it all back plus more once they go off the low carb diet.

I would say that the safest thing for anyone to do would be to consult a physician, have a dietician draw up a healthy and well-balanced meal plan and start working out. After all, there is no better way of getting into shape than through exercise and a proper diet.
